Why smell WWII knife like rancid butter?
I have a bayonet from World War I had bought in an antique store complete with original cover. It was a strange smell rancid butter in recent months … The same has happened with several screwdrivers I put in a toolbox in the trunk of my car, and the box of screwdrivers and everything had to be discarded. Needless to say there is no way I'm throwing my bayonet, and the need to find out why this happens and if there is a "cure. Any help would be great! Thanks!
Since this occurred in several articles metal in the trunk itself, I suspect it has something else in its trunk, which is having a chemical reaction with the metal itself. More than likely that some products chemicals. Take a look and see what else you got there. You may want to try a little boric acid (powder mixed with water) and soak in a bayonet days. Without knowing what has reacted to the metal, would be difficult to positively state that eliminate odor. Good luck and I hope this is helpful
