High Adventure

Orizaba is a city of about 100,000 Indians and mixed Spanish blood inhabitants is named after Mt. Orizaba (Pico de Orizaba), the highest peak in Mexico and the third highest peak in North America at an altitude of about 18,406 feet (5,610 meters). Only Mt. McKinley, Alaska, and Mt. Logan in Canada are higher. Also known as Pico de Orizaba, which can have snow at peak levels throughout the year, but the mountain climbing season in winter, the opposite of the other North American climbs. Orizaba, which makes it a popular destination from November to February. The climbers (and tourists) come principally from across North America with some from Europe and beyond. Almost everyone speaks English, so that trade in the teaching of English is booming. Local schools and businesses want and need their services!

There are several interesting websites with information about the volcano, which appeared last eruption in 1687, prior eruptions in 1613 and 1537. The point is that unlike Mt. Popocatepetl, you will not have to worry about flying hot rocks, lava or steam from volcanic craters Asphyxiating and suffocating ash. As in other mountains and natural features in the regions of the Aztecs, is a legend attached to the Pico de Orizaba, a name that means "Hill of the Star "in Nahuatl – the language of the Aztecs. Legend has it that the feathered serpent, Quetzalcoatl, was consumed by flames raging in the heart sacred Pico de Orizaba, then took on human form and finally sailed from the coast of Veracruz by sea, promising one day to return to his beloved people.

Getting to and away Orizaba:

Orizaba is conveniently located in the Turnpike's main route between Mexico City in the mountains and the city of Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico. There are buses in both directions, connecting the smaller cities and towns, so getting there is easy. Xalapa, the capital city of Veracruz and Puebla, which dominates Mexico's current volcano in action, can also be easily accessible.

There is train service (El Jarocho) in Veracruz – Mexico City line, the fare is about 130 pesos each way. Check for a schedule update in Mexico City and Veracruz, in the interests that train. Currently, there is a train each way per day. In Orizaba, the train station on the corner of West 19 and South 10.
