To start with the free describes the source as the origin or source from which something comes. The term is often used in the sense of place and time of manufacture, production or discovery. Comparative techniques, expert opinion, written and verbal records and the results of the tests are often used to help establish provenance.
Provenance can take many forms:
* A statement signed certificate of authenticity or authority respected.
* A statement or label attached to the art gallery.
* An original purchase receipt.
* Mention or illustration of the technique in a book or a catalog of the exhibition.
If the art gallery, or online auction website does not mention a COA and ask if they have one and who issued it. Ask to see a copy of the certificate and ask if the COA comes with the purchase.
