Although Turkey's fall season has been open since 6 October, the DNR reminds hunters that many leftover fall turkey licenses are available for the purchase of many of the wild turkey management units. Licenses are still available for 12 of the 17 hunts that run through Nov. 14. Most leftover licenses are for private lands, but many general licenses that are valid for both public and private land, remains of two units: Unit of M in the Upper Peninsula, and Unit J, which includes Emmet, Cheboygan, Charlevoix, Antrim, and Otsego counties. Fall turkey seasons are used as means of controlling turkey populations in areas where populations are high.
An important component to successful fall turkey hunting is the location of the birds. Scout tracks, fresh droppings and feathers. Good bird-watching areas in idle lands and forests and near trails for registration.
In the fall, turkeys spend most of their time feeding insects and mast crops like acorns. Locate a source of good food, where birds are congregating and learn the habits of birds.
